The Saga of Our Hero – LT Atul Katarya S.M.(Veerta)

‘A true tradition of excellence, courage, determination, and fearlessness’

LT Atul Katarya was born on February 21, 1975 in Gurgaon to proud parents Smt Sumitra Katarya and Col Dhanraj Katarya. Passing out of NDA in 1995 and IMA in 1996, a third generation soldier in the family was baptised in the true traditions of the Indian Army.

Commissioned in one of the most illustrious regiments of the Indian Army, 13 Punjab (Jind) LT Atul proved his mettle from day one.

Through his military genius and his ability to gather information employing unorthodox and innovative tactics LT Atul soon became the bane of the insurgents and terrorists in the Kashmir Valley. LT Atul volunteered himself for all high-risk missions and played a pivotal role in the elimination of scores of militants and foreign mercenaries in fiercely fought encounters in Kashmir.

LT Atul always led from the front and his death defying courage and ruthless offensive spirit while engaging the enemy in close quarter battle, virtually silenced militancy in Southern Kashmir. Defying death, in the face of duty to his nation, LT Atul lived by the ethos, “Service before self”. His unswerving resolve was rewarded by the response so endearing to the local populace that they adopted him, lovingly calling him “ABDUL”.

On 14th October, 1998, on one such mission in Sangarwani area of Pulwana district, LT Atul charged into a militant hideout with his gun blazing with full fury, till a hail of enemy bullets caught him in the hour of his triumph. His patrol rushed to the scene only to find that THE TIGER OF 13 PUNJAB (JIND), ABDUL – THE DARLING OF THE LOCAL KASHMIRIS AND A GREAT SON OF INDIA LAY MARTYRED.

The school follows the philosophy which is best expressed in the five pillars which form the acronym IDEAL.

The students are taught to appreciate, value and respect all cultures, religions and languages. They learn to see themselves as global citizens and are asked to look beyond gender, class, race, nationality and culture to understand human nature.

Teaching students both the values of democracy and the importance of active participation in democracy is essential. Freedom of thought and speech is greatly encouraged and appropriate forums and channels of communication are set in place. They are trained and expected to share in the running of the school.

Students are expected to demonstrate an active interest and concern for all natural environments, to be aware of proven problems and to play a practical role in tackling environmental issues.

The school provides opportunities for student leadership in the school’s community. Leadership roles, held by senior students, in particular, are substantial and range from management of house-keeping positions to holding key leadership positions. A high level of responsibility is passed on to students individually and collectively.

From the Chairman Desk

Col Dhanraj Katarya, Chairman

“Oft when on my couch I lie In vacant or in pensive mood; They flash upon my inward eye Which is the bliss of solitude,”

True enough, for like daffodils the momentous growth of the school through these years has given me a unique sense of contentment. I can satisfactorily say that Lt Atul Katarya Memorial School has adhered to the philosophy of quality education and holistic development of each child. Our emphasis remains on developing the inherent creative talent and potential of all “ATULYANS”.

I am proud of all our students as they time and again prove through their achievements that we are on the right track. In order to successfully continue this momentous task we count on the whole hearted support of our parents.

In our journey of eleven years, now is the time to reflect, to look back and assess afresh our achievements and shortcomings and make improvements where required. As the founder chairman of the school, I would like all of you to make a resolution that you will set an example for others to emulate the vision of ATUL in the field of academics and ethics. That you will channelize your energy to bring laurels to yourself, your family, your school and your country.

From the Director’s Desk

Mrs. Sumitra Katarya, Director

“There is one thing stronger than all the armies of the world and that is an idea whose time has come.”

The idea of beginning this school took its seed while I was drifting through the doldrums of my life. It was no doubt the most momentous moment for me. I wanted something to keep the verve, the effervescence and the enthusiasm – or I should rather say, the “ATULYAJOSH” – of my Atul alive and felt that this was the most befitting manner and time in which it could be done. As Victor Hugo said,”There is one thing stronger than all the armies of the world and that is an idea whose time has come”. This is how the fruition of my dreams took place in the form of birth of this institution.

I would like to thank all those whose hard work and dedication have brought this institution to its present standing. As we grow from strength to strength, the core mission of our school remains the same – quality education with strong emphasis on character building. This mission, which grew from my desire to mould our students – the young citizens of our country – in the same positive mould as Lt Atul Katarya, continues to provide the motivation to achieve greater success.

From the Principal’s Desk

Mukti Suhag Principal

Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.

Better to light a candle than to curse the darkness

Success is the good fortune that comes from aspiration, desperation, perspiration and inspiration.

LT Atul Katarya Memorial School, has been accomplishing the professed role of providing excellent and effective education to its students. In this age of cut-throat competition, we make a constant effort to hone the capability of students to counter challenges by performance enhancement and giving an academic edge for facing challenges in the outside world. We aim at creating an educational environment to symbolize certain values that help them achieve goals without disregarding deep rooted cultural ethos.

We incessantly strive to augment the capabilities of our students by providing the best of facilities and ensure that they come out with flying colours through their sterling performances and also maximize their potential. The motto of the institution is to not only enhance the intellect of the child but also his/her emotional and spiritual quotient. These three put together will help the student reach the pinnacle of excellence.

It has rightly been said, “Excellence is never granted, it is the reward of labour.”. It is the vision of our patrons, determination and dedication of our students and the commitment of our faculty that today AKMS is a name synonymous with excellence.

I strongly believe that nothing in life that is worthy is ever too hard to achieve if you have the courage to try it and the faith to believe. We are born to manifest the glory that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone.

So, let our own light shine……
